KATYA GROKHOVSKY [NYC/UKRAINE/AUSTRALIA]
"Breathless"
Grokhovsky deals with notions of alienation, identity and the gaze through a displaced body. Breathless is a live action, in which Katya attempts to read her recent texts in one breath, repeatedly, pushing the body to its utter most limits, whilst evoking a painful metaphor of assimilation, migration and the crisis in the country of her birth, Ukraine.
Katya Grokhovsky is a Brooklyn based, Ukrainian/Australian interdisciplinary artist. She employs various mediums in her work, including performance, video, installation, photography, sculpture, drawing and writing. She has an MFA (2011) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA and a BFA (2007) from Victorian College of the Arts, Australia and has a background and training in fashion and dance.
Grokhovsky is a recipient of numerous awards including Dame Joan Sutherland Fund, NYC , Australia Council for the Arts ArtStart Grant, NYFA Mentoring Program, Chashama space to create grant, NYC, Freedman Traveling Scholarship for Emerging Artists, Australia , Maude Glover Fleay Award, Australia and many others. She has been awarded residencies at APT Institute, NYC, Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Ithaca, NY, NARS (New York Residency and Studio Foundation), Santa Fe Art Institute, NM, ChaNorth residency, NY, Watermill Center International Summer Residency, NY, OxBow Residency, MI, PAF(performing arts forum) residency, France and more.
