MACTO SUBSTANTIA GRISEA!!!! Grace Exhibition Space's first benefit party! with a participatory performance in the spirit of Non Grata
Grace Exhibition Space proudly presents Macto Substantia Grisea*, the first annual benefit to support our upcoming programs. On this evening we introduce the opportunity for membership, and an exclusive opportunity to preview the new installment of The Alice Chilton Gallery in Grace Exhibition Space!!
New York City has seen a renewed interest in the art of performance with the Performa Biannual, the Marina Abramovich retrospective at MOMA, and the resurgence of venues offering new practices in performance art curating. Brooklyn is poised to stand with Boston and Chicago as performance art capitals in the United States.
This season we offer up a highlight of contemporary performance artists that live in the United States of America, as well as presenting a selection of international artists. Grace Exhibition Space maintains a purpose of glorification and support of performance art. Among the American artists featured are EJ Hill, Lopi LaRoe, Rafael Sanchez, Faith Johnson, Rebecca Jampol, Whitney V. Hunter, and Matthew Silver as well as Raquel Loloya [Philippines] and Moe Saat [Myanmar/Burma] .
* Macto Substantia Grisea is latin for Glorify the Gray Matter. Grey matter (or gray matter) (lat. Substantia grisea) is a major component of the central nervous system. Grey matter contains neural cell bodies, in contrast to white matter, which does not.
Tribute to Non Grata Group
There will also be a performance by New York based members of the collective Non Grata, making all participants of the benefit participants of the performance.
In Non Grata there have been more than 300 members during last 12 years from all over the world. The main characteristics is anonymity in group work, ignorance of local art world and mass media. Group has performed in Asia, Europe, South and North America with street actions, chaotic space and context specific performances and long lasting ghetto marathons.

ABOUT GRACE EXHIBITION SPACE
Grace Exhibition Space opened in 2006 and is devoted exclusively to Performance Art. We offer an opportunity to experience visceral and challenging performance works by the current generation of international performance artists, whether emerging, mid career or established. Being a Brooklyn loft, our events are presented on the floor, not on a stage, dissolving the boundary between artist and viewer. We believe this is how performance art is meant to be experienced.
"There is no designated stage area, blurring the line between audience and performer, and seating is sparse, as participating in the performance is encouraged. The unknown terrifies you, and yet something, maybe this very feeling, pushes you inside. Welcome to Grace Exhibition Space."
Terri Ciccone in Bushwick Daily. January 3, 2013
"On each night, and in each performance, the human body is redeemed from the mundane and made anew." David Lagaccia, Williamsburg Greenpoint News+Art (June, 2012)
