This is a new series being presented by the Directors of the Grace Exhibition Space and visiting artists, to attempt to answer that eternal question, "What is FLUXUS Performance Art and How Can I Make It?" Please bring an object with you TONIGHT! We are delighted to be presenting a workshop run by Arienne Foks. Arienne returns for Part 2 of her workshop on Tuesday, October18
Arienne performed at Grace Exhibition Space October 7 at Grace Space, and at the Fountain Art Fair last March
ARIENNE FOKS [PARIS, FRANCE]
Arianne Foks is a visual and performance artist. Graduated in 2007 from Toulouse Fine Art School, she was resident of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in China in 2006, and of the Cit Internationale des Arts de Paris in 2008.
In 2010, she presented a series of performances across Europe, in Paris, Berlin, Milan, Tallinn, Cardiff
Arianne Foks is interested in the presentation of the body as a medium, its relationship to architecture, domestic objects, and its power to engage us, the audience and the performer, in an emotional way through memory or by evocation. Her work questions desire, identity and physical or conceptual displacement. The shift of use of an object creates a shift in her identity. Her performances are a meeting between body and object, but naturally a meeting with the audience. Perhaps a love story? She collaborates with many sound and performance and dance artists from different parts of the world to enrich her experience and create exchanges.
Fluxus encourages a "do-it-yourself" aesthetic, and values simplicity over complexity. Like Dada before it, Fluxus includes a strong current of anti-commercialism and an anti-art sensibility, disparaging the conventional market-driven art world in favor of an artist-centered creative practice. - paraphrased from Wikipedia
JILL MCDERMID-HOKANSON AND ERIK HOKANSON, DIRECTORS OF GRACE EXHIBITION SPACE:
Grace Exhibition Space is Directed by Jill McDermid and Erik Hokanson, who participate in international performance-art festivals as artists and curators throughout Europe, Asia, Central and South America.
The most common, stable, and reliable states of the universe are the qualities of darkness and cold. We live in a very unusual condition of relative warmth and light. We are living here (earth) -humans, spiders, grass, fish, carrots, bacteria, mice, viruses. We are all related. We need to eat each other. It's the price of peace, beauty, security, humor, love, and hope. Our bodies, like those of all other organisms here, are communities of cells working together essentially for their own preservation. We will all become food for something someday. The sun will make our place food for itself someday. I don't know what will eat the sun. Then it will likely become cold and dark. I take comfort in this. I like natural states.
My life is a performance, and Im enjoying it immensely. I have a Master of Art and a Master of Fine Arts, in Video + Performance Art, from the University of Iowa Intermedia Department, 1999 and 2000, respectively.
Since 1998, I have been making performance art and participating in international performance art festivals in Europe, Asia, South and Central America. Including in September 2009, participating in the 10th Open International Performance Art Festival in Beijing as one of 8 curators. In Brooklyn in 2006, I opened the Grace Exhibition Space, which is devoted only to the exhibiting of live Performance Art.
As Director of the Grace Exhibition Space, I hope to foster exchanges between international and local performance artists. As Director of the Alice Chilton Gallery for Performance Art Documentation, I hope to create a commercial market for the limited-edition photographs, dvds, scores and artifacts created from the performances.
